A God Beyond Imagining

September 5, 2006

From Cindy Crosby’s By Willoway Brook:

"Give me God beyond my imagining, Not a God that I completely understand and can explain, but a God whose depths cannot be fathomed. A God who dreams up the idea of a green caterpillar that would eat leaves, spin a chrysalis and burst from it as an insect with powdered, tissue-thin orange and black wings that soak up sunlight like solar energy panels. A God who gives this butterfly an unerring instinct to warm itself and lift off on a breeze, heading for a home it instinctively longs for, yet knows is there only by faith."

We do ourselves a great disservice when we decide to believe in only what we can see and understand. We wonder if there is really a God who loves us—one who cares about mankind. And because we cannot touch this God and cannot understand how God works, we suspect that the whole idea is preposterous.

We cannot touch God but can be touched by God. We cannot understand God but can understand our need for something beyond ourselves.

We look into our mirrors, examine our reflection, and think we know ourselves. We decide we’re too old, too young, too fat, too thin, too poor, too… Then something inspires us to look homeward—to look God-ward—for a truer assessment of who we are. Hope is rekindled. Our energy is renewed. There is work to be done, discoveries to be made.

“The place where our experience of God as real converges with our experience of who we really are, is the place in which we will discover the spiritual center of our lives.”

Hi, Anita. I'm so glad to reconnect with you since you left Atlanta. My critique group misses your charming fiction pieces. Hope you are planning on finishing them at some point. I'll be checking back. God bless.
